Each quarterly issue of the Transformer is now being written by a different local AVP group around a theme of their choosing. Local groups are encouraged to take on responsibility for an edition. Editorial Coordinator Pat Hardy works with the group to select their theme and receives their copy and prepares it for graphic design.

Individual Instructions Articles, photos and artwork are always welcome, especially around topics related to the themes of upcoming issues.

Submit your copy to Editorial Coordinator, Editor@avpusa.org. Click here for detailed submission information, Editorial Guidelines.

the Transformer Newsletter Editorial Guidelines

  1. Each Issue Editors will set the Theme for their issue with the Editorial coordinator.
  2. Copy material should represent several areas where possible. (These are taken in order of their preference from a recent survey):
    1. Stories/hints about workshops from outside and inside facilitators
    2. New exercises (allow one page so it can readily copied and put in a manual) /L&Ls or tweaking of existing exercises
    3. Ethical issues on facilitation
    4. Hints on working with prison staff
    5. Information on how a local council functions, handles problems, recruits
    6. AVP USA activities (this can be handled by the editorial coordinator)
    7. Each article should have a 10-25 word bio on the writer.
  3. Copy should be submitted electronically, single-spaced in Word with each article in a separate document to Editor@avpusa.org.
    1. Do not attempt to layout the copy. It only makes it more difficult for the graphic designer.
For paragraphs, merely hit the Return or Enter key on your keyboard, no need to indent.
    2. Use one typeface/font.
    3. If you wish a section to be a sidebar in a box, then type in that request but don't put in a box.
Example: [sidebar] [image: thisimage.jpg]This text goes in a sidebar box. [end sidebar]
    4. Commas, periods, exclamation points should have only one space after them.
    5. If you have a chart, put it in Excel and the publisher will convert it.
  4. Feel free to assign headlines and use sub-heads for sections in articles for easier reading, but there is no need to change the typeface or capitalize to show this. Just put these on a separate line and the graphics person will figure that out. If you don't use sub-heads, we will create them in long articles.
  5. Providing high quality, reproducible art or photos that augment the articles is highly recommended. If you can have your art or photos scanned locally, and submit them electronically, that is preferred.

Word Count: You have seven pages for copy and photos and a maximum of 5000 words (unless a smaller amount is indicated for your issue...see Editorial Calendar above). Please allow space for including photos or art by using less words (as described below). You are encouraged to provide photos and drawings. Do not feel you need to fill the newsletter. We have things we save for when we have extra space.

There are approximately 650 words per page. Regarding art or photo images, for each vertical inch (in one column), subtract 54 words from the total words per page. (Words are calculated at five letters plus a space each.)

Please submit photos or artwork with article submissions if possible. The preferred method is as an attachment to an email. Preferred formats are as .jpg files, .jpeg files, & .gif files. If you do not have email capability or access to putting the material on a disc, then submissions and any accompanying materials may be mailed to:

the Transformer
P.O. Box 3294
Santa Barbara, CA 93130

If postal mailing is used, please do not expect to have your written materials returned.

At the risk of sounding heartless, we cannot guarantee that articles submitted will be published or that the volunteers involved in the compiling of the Transformer will communicate with you regarding this.
